Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a serious medical condition that can increase the risk of heart, brain, kidney, and other diseases. It’s a leading cause of premature death worldwide.
Dear Everyone,
As part of our illness prevention programme the Sherborne Area Primary Care Network is conducting another in our series of health talks. This time the talk will be on the subject of Hypertension (blood pressure) and it will be held in Sherborne Library on TUESDAY 15th. OCTOBER. (See below for details).
The talk is free and you do not have to book, and it is open to all patients of the Grove Medical Centre, the Apples Medical Centre, and Yetminster Health Centre, so why not come along and find out more on this important subject?
Here’s some more information about hypertension:
- Blood pressure
Blood pressure is the force of blood against the walls of your arteries. It’s normal for blood pressure to fluctuate throughout the day, but it’s a problem if it’s consistently high, even when you’re resting.
- Risk factors
Some risk factors for hypertension include unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, smoking, alcohol consumption, and being overweight.
- Treatment
Treatment for hypertension may involve medication and lifestyle changes. Some common medications include angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, thiazide diuretics, alpha-blockers, and beta-blockers.
- Goals
The goal of treatment for hypertension is to lower blood pressure to a safe level, usually around 130/80 mm Hg or less.
